The Oulunkylä center redevelopment will transform three urban blocks into a high-quality residential and public services hub, conveniently located near a train station and new fast tram stop. This project involves new masterplan for the central blocks to face the needs of growing population in the area by creating new residential areas, public services, and commercial spaces.
Sloped-roof houses on the station side and terraced apartment buildings along the railway form clear blocks perimeter while creating a personalized urban space. Building heights decrease towards the existing building environment, ensuring harmony with the neighborhood. The tallest buildings are centrally located to avoid casting shadows on surrounding areas. Existing public squares, such as Oulunkylä Square and Tapio Rautavaara Park, will remain and enhance the community's identity.
A key focus is on improving connectivity and promoting sustainable transportation. New pathways and routes will provide safe, pleasant connections to the train station, fast tram stop, and bus stops, encouraging walking and cycling. Underground parking will maximize street-level spaces, featuring a library, youth center, adult education center, and various commercial areas. Tapio Rautavaara Park will be preserved as a central element of the local identity. These measures will contribute to a vibrant and functional urban area. The streetscape will highlight visibility and incorporate public art, using timeless and durable materials to create a cohesive and lasting architectural identity of Oulunkylä.
