Korkeavuorenkatu: Modern Office in the Existing Frame
Two existing buildings from the 1950s and 1960s have been renovated and merged to create spaces that meet the high demands of a modern office environment. The natural stone façade, the entrance group together with the courtyard and the main stairwell of the building from the 1950s hold a status of protected building environment heritage, which adds to the complexity and significance of the project. To tackle this challenge, we carefully analysed the existing structures, successfully preserving their heritage while upgrading the spaces. The facades have also been renovated without compromising their original appearance and details.
As a result of a comprehensive, two-year renovation, a courtyard was covered and integrated, existing building floors were connected, and two new floors were added on top. A new atrium, covered with a glass roof, preserves the feeling of an outdoor space while extending the functional interior area. The preservation of architectural elements, such as the stone floors, mosaic, and glass walls, respects the buildings’ heritage.
Thanks to the EY’s, main building user's, high ambitions and the dedicated efforts of all designers, the building was awarded the highest LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum certificate. Attention was paid to energy efficiency, material choices, and their recyclability. The preservation of the existing building frame significantly reduced the carbon footprint caused by the construction.
